“Lipodissolve” - fact and fiction

October 27th, 2008

Whether it’s marketed as “lipodissolve”, “fat loss injections”, or “injection lipolysis”, the concept behind these names is the same.  The technician injects various substances into the fat beneath the skin, with the end result…hopefully…fat loss.  This technique is typically applied to areas like the abdomen, thighs, or neck.

Historically the term, mesotherapy, has been used to describe these procedures.  “Practicing mesotherapy in the United States is a highly controversial subject, due in large part to the absence of standard dosages and the inconsistency of the main ingredients - and the ingredients being used are not FDA-approved for such a purpose.” - American Society of Plastic Surgeons

The other concern that I have with mesotherapy is that there is little actual scientific data to support its use, and the scientific papers that have been published are of the lowest level.  That is to say that they have poor validity and low quality.

On the other hand, liposuction has been extremely well-studied.  It has excellent and predictable results.  In my practice, I recommend power assisted liposuction for most areas of the body.  This technique can be used to contour those difficult areas of the body that just don’t improve regardless of weight loss and exercise.  In general, recovery takes approximately a week.  It may take a full three months to see the final results; although, at six weeks a very good result may be seen.

My final thoughts on lipodissolve are that I simply cannot recommend it.

I’d like to introduce you to SkinMedica!

October 13th, 2008

I am pleased to announce that we have just added the skin care line, SkinMedica, to the practice.  SkinMedica is a physician-administered line of skin care products with the unique ingredient, Nouricel-MD.  What makes Nouricel-MD effective is the use of skin growth factors.

Growth factors are proteins that stimulate specific cells to turn on and do what they are programmed to do. They are also messenger molecules, and their numbers begin to dwindle over time. Products that contain growth factors help rejuvenate the skin by replacing the lost growth factors that tell the collagen-producing cells within the skin to ramp up their output. In turn, the skin literally acts more youthful.

PEPTIDES AND GROWTH FACTORS ARE HOT INGREDIENTS IN THE WAR AGAINST AGING.  WHILE BOTH CAN HELP STIMULATE COLLAGEN PRODUCTION, EACH HAS ADDITIONAL EFFECTS THAT MAY HELP YOU GET THE BEAUTY BENEFITS YOU’RE LOOKING FOR.

Growth factors are clearly the ingredients that sets SkinMedica apart from all of the other skin care lines, but there are other components to a really good skin care regimen.  I would recommend considering the use of Vitamin C, Vitamin A (i.e. retinoic acid), and a good sunblock to help correct pre-existing damage and to prevent additional damage to your skin.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

October 12th, 2008

Today, I joined thousands of women and men, to show my support for breast cancer, in a five mile walk through downtown Cincinnati and Newport, KY.  I was truly impressed by the courage and strength of the breast cancer survivors, many of whom are in much better physical shape than I am.

As it is breast cancer awareness month, I encourage all women 40 years of age and older to remember to get their screening mammograms this month.  No matter what your age, monthly breast self-examinations are an important tool in detecting early breast cancer, as well.

For those of you who are survivors…Congratulations!  I may not remember to tell you when you are in the office, but I think you’re amazing!  Keep up the fight.

My New Website

May 18th, 2008

Welcome to my new website!!  I have been working on the site for about 4 months now, and we finally launched it about 3 weeks ago.  It has taken the last few weeks to get the blog launched, and this is my first post.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am a female plastic surgeon in the Cincinnati area.  I’ve been in practice about 6 years now, and specialize in breast and body contouring.  I also have a special love for eyelid surgery and facial rejuvenation.

I am also a technophile.  I truly appreciate technology, and am looking forward to writing future posts that address some of the latest technology in the field of Plastic Surgery.

Hope you all have a fantastic week!

Jen Butterfield, M.D.
